Master Plan, New Science and Math Building, New Multi-purpose Building and Campus-wide Renovations

Info

"Our district is very pleased and impressed with HED and is looking forward to a long and successful relationship with them."

Steve Romines, PhD, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, Manhattan Beach USD
  • "Harley Ellis Devereaux insists on a team mentality. They work well with boards, community members, district staff, construction managers and contractors." Steve Romines, Director of Facilites

  • The new Math Science Building is a three story building clad in multi-colored cement fiberboard panels and built into the hillside to minimize massing. It complements the other newer buildings at the perimeter of the campus. An anchor at the northeast corner of the site, it becomes a community landmark signaling the revitalization of the campus.
  • The Master Plan resulted from an extended process of client and user group discussions and workshops, research, site exploration, and design. The Learning Environment combines new and existing spaces to provide expanded program opportunities and new kinds of facilities to better accommodate a high performing comprehensive high school.
  • The reconfiguration of the campus strengthens the high school community by giving it a new heart through the creation of the Student Commons. It also strengthens outreach to the surrounding community by placing its most public components like the new multi-purpose hall at the perimeter of the campus close to public parking and pedesterian access.
  • The new Math Science Building acts as a three dimensional textbook. Starting at the main staircase a three story screen is detailed with an undulating pattern of bars that express the number Pi graphically.
  • The sectional perspective of the main entrance to the Math Science Building illustrates the location of a display monitor which measures and monitors the energy performnace of the facility on an ongoing basis.
  • The existing shell shaped auditorium has also been enhanced by sensitive lobby renovations.
  • As an enhancement to the existing 2,500 seat auditorium, the performing arts facilities have been enhanced with a new, intimate, multi-purpose hall with retractable seating and dedicated rehearsal spaces. The new hall has a flat floor which can be used for conferences, fund raising events, dance performances and parent meetings.
