Household Materials Collection Center

Chicago, Illinois

City of Chicago, Department of Environment

  • Located in an abandoned warehouse and incinerator in Chicago’s historic area of Goose Island, Harley Ellis Devereaux provided exterior design and LEED consulting services for the certification of the Household Materials Collection Center and interior design services for the facility’s Training Center.
  • With a new lightweight vegetative roofing system, the life of the existing roof is extended. The heavily landscaped site with native trees, shrubs and perennials also contributes to the facility’s sustainable design.
  • Much of the facility’s existing pavement and parking was left in situ and resurfaced. The areas of reconfigured parking received new concrete and curbs with areas for landscaping.
  • The project site was reworked to incorporate an underground storm water retention system such as new bioswales that allow for through ground purification before entering into the adjacent river.
  • This adaptive reuse project was designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification per The Chicago Standard derived from the USGBC’s LEED rating system to “Conserve Energy, Reduce Costs, and Improve Quality of Life.”
