Intraoperative MRI (iMRI)

  • Pioneering innovation. The new, state-of-the-art intraoperative MRI (iMRI) project located on Henry Ford Hospital’s Detroit campus is the first and only of its kind in Michigan.

  • The iMRI is located directly in the center of the OR Department, surrounded by active ORs, and is utilized in conjunction with a neurology OR to perform groundbreaking procedures.
  • The iMRI was designed to an OR standard and includes custom OR ceilings, floor and wall finishes - which, when combined with an MRI, generates a great amount of noise level. The IMEDCO silent shield design and room shielding system helped reduce the noise level tremendously.
  • The equipment needed to be dropped through the roof of the six floor hospital to the fourth floor where the operating rooms are located. Nothing made of metal attracted to magnets can be placed in this environment, which required a total rethinking of surgical tools, ventilators, monitors, and support needed for the operative care of patients.
  • The iMRI is providing neurosurgeons with an amazingly detailed view of brain tumors during surgery which makes it possible to safely and effectively navigate the brain. The iMRI also will aid in the treatment of epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and neuro-psychiatric disorders.
