Project Description: “L” shaped school consisting of a two-story classroom block with North and South facing windows along Tupper St., and a one-story support wing including library, administration, multi-purpose room and kitchen with East and West facing windows stretching along Columbia Ave. The main entrance is located at the intersection of the classroom block and the support wing at the Southwest corner of the site, maximizing the queuing distance for passenger drop off along Columbia Ave. The two corners of the “L” embrace a single rectangular play yard consisting of landscape area, kindergarten playground and a multipurpose turf field and track. Open arcades line the administration and multipurpose wing to provide a lunch shelter and shade from the Western sun. The design is contemporary in language with horizontal interlocking forms that echo the spirit of the mid -century middle school on the adjacent site. Materials include painted cement plaster and cement fiber board, corrugated metal siding, low “E” and spandrel glass, as well as screens of steel grating and perforated metal. Exterior light shelves are employed to shield the windows from unwanted sun light while maximizing internal day lighting.
