Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) has selected HED as one of the four firms to serve as the pool of architects for Measure GG and related facilities projects to improve their campuses.
HED will serve as the Master Architect for the district overseeing the educational facilities planning and coordinating the overall architectural work for Measure GG in addition to being assigned specific projects.
The district's schools include one preschool child development center, four K-5 schools, six K-6 schools, two middle (6-8) schools, two high schools, two dependent charter schools, one continuation high school, and a community adult school. Numerous independent charter schools are also located in the district, serving approximately 11,500 students. Many of these facilities have been in operation for an extended period of time without any significant upgrades or replacement programs, presenting severe challenges to the district. At its peak, the district served over 14,000 students. The oldest educational facility is 86 years old, while the newest, La Tijera K-8 Academy of Excellence Charter School, is five years old.
These aging facilities offer both opportunities and challenges. HED has been assigned Inglewood High School which currently serves 1,057 students. The campus, opened in 1905, has an administration and classroom building built in the 1930's which is architecturally significant. Inglewood High School has been the home to many notable alumni including Sonny Bono, MLB World Series Champion Coco Crisp, and architect Edla Muir among many others. Campus buildings will be restored and transformed in a manner that creates spaces for 21st century learning, while paying homage to its storied history. Priority will be placed on pilot projects, to kick start this meaningful endeavor, which modernize classrooms with flexible furnishings and sound control; providing stakeholders the opportunity to experience what the transformed campuses will have to offer.
