Emergency Dept at Wm. Beaumont Hospital

HED is pleased to announce the completion of the new $85-million emergency department at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.

The 119,080-square-foot addition and 56,250-square-foot renovation more than doubles the size of the existing emergency department and features 114 exam rooms, 16 triage bays, four trauma bays and a helipad on the roof. The expansion also includes 53 medical/observation beds.

The new emergency department will be one of the largest (by volume) level one trauma centers in the United States and is the only level one trauma center in Oakland County.

"This has been an extremely rewarding project for our team," said Rick Hall, Healthcare Studio Leader at HED.  "Most of our staff and family members have been treated at a Beaumont facility and it's great to see first-hand the positive impact the new emergency department will make on the community."

Triage is designed for optimum efficiency whereby patients are evaluated and placed by diagnosis into different pods that focus on either pediatrics, cardiology, behavioral health or general medical emergencies.  The center is fully equipped with new technology, including devices that monitor patients in every room sending results directly to medical staff; noninvasive heart monitors allowing staff to quickly evaluate heart and trauma patients; the ability to communicate patient information throughout the hospital and physician offices; digital imaging to provide immediate results; including two CTs and an MRI machine to expedite patient imaging.

"Having worked on over 1 million-square-feet of Beaumont's campus, HED understands how to manage complex projects with multiple phases like this," said Hall. "We are proud to continue this strong partnership with Beaumont."

"When the expansion and renovation is fully complete, we will have doubled the size of the Emergency Center, Emergency patient volume at Beaumont, Royal Oak continues to grow," said Terry Kowalenko, M.D., chair, Emergency Medicine, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and Professor and Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. "Since 2011, we have seen a nearly 12 percent increase in patient visits. We are expanding and renovating in phases so that we don't disrupt care for our community. This means that some patients will continue to be served in the older, existing areas until our renovations are complete at the end of 2018."

The new emergency department at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, will open to patients on August 31, 2017. HED is Architect and Engineer of Record.
