Who Should Attend?
W hat do paper airplanes, yarn, and cardboard have in common with the new Children's Hospital of Michigan (CHM) Specialty Center? They are the building blocks for an outpatient specialty center that brings CHM experts from downtown Detroit to the suburbs in a facility that was unmistakably designed for kids. The center brings a full array of children's healthcare specialties, including a 24/7 pediatric emergency department, created to minimize travel and wait times while simplifying access to critical pediatric specialists. A group comprised of 100 physicians, nurses, and support staff from the hospital - plus parents and children from the community - were engaged in a lean, integrated design process that relied heavily on mock-ups to reduce costs & time and ensure alignment of expectations and design. The positive results included reduced gross building area, improved functionality, and reduced waste.
