The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan–Troy is a model of creative design, says Jeff Ferenc in a new article for Healthcare Facilities Management Magazine.

Detroit Medical Center's (DMC) Children's Hospital Michigan -- Troy Specialty Center, which opened in February 2016, is a new child-focused facility designed just for kids.

Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED) designed the facilty in partnership with Children's Hospital of Michigan. Following the Lean lead of Simpler and in conjunction with HED-trained Lean staff, an integrative facility design process resulted in a decrease in the overall area of the building by 12 percent from what was originally anticipated in programming.

Below is an excerpt from the article.

“The way Lean design works is that we didn’t talk about the design at all. We talked about the flow of patients through our system. We identified what was not valuable to the parents and their kids and what was valuable,” [Children’s Hospital of Michigan CEO Larry] Gold says. Waiting rooms, a harbinger of inefficiency, are few and far between, he notes.

As for the design, the health care system wanted something creative and whimsical for the kids, and staff and the architects delivered what has become a beacon in the community, he says. “It was a collaborative effort between some really imaginative architects and us,” Gold says about the partnership between design firm Harley Ellis Devereaux andthe hospital.
