Outpatient Centers

March 15, 2016

The first ambulatory care center opened in the United States in 1970.  Today, there are 5,260 centers, making outpatient centers nearly as numerous as hospitals.  Cost efficiencies are the main driver of ambulatory expansion, with procedures costing 30-60% less in outpatient settings than hospitals.  When designing the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center, HED designers eliminated 15% of the gross area by leaning operations to match the available space.  A medical office building for Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) has become the focal point of the community, treating population health and wellness, functioning as a hospital without beds.
