Ktown’s Double Apartment Towers Breaking Ground This Week

Get ready for some heavy duty crane action at the southeast corner of Vermont and Wilshire as The Vermont prepares to break ground this week, developer JH Snyder announced today. Snyder declares The Vermont to be the "largest residential project under construction since the recession began in 2008"--it is indeed massive, with 464 apartments, including affordable units, spread among two towers. The buildings will rise 22 and 28 stories, but there will also be plenty of action at street level, with 40,000 square feet of retail. Snyder insinuates that a grocery store is coming, but it's not clear if anyone's signed a lease yet. Also coming: "Shared lounge-style workspace, a pool, high-end gym and spa exclusively" for tenants. Best of all, the project includes a 12,000 square foot parcel of open space, perfect for this park-starved area. To placate neighbors, Snyder also agreed to fund 96 affordable units in the vicinity and to build a community center. The project, designed by Jerde Partnership and Harley Ellis Devereaux, aims to be LEED-certified when it opens in 2014. For some context, this long blighted corner was once proposed as a home for a vertical (sort of vertical) mall concept. That idea went south like so many other things in 2008.
